Description
|
The witness, CEO of Philip Morris, was deposed by the plaintiffs. He encapsulated the research conducted at Philip Morris, including studies of nicotine addiction, the effects of smoking, and the effects of secondhand smoke. He acknowledged that secondhand smoke probably poses dangers for asthmatics, pregnant women, and children. He stated that smoking is addictive "behaviorally," but not "pharmacologically." He denied that cigarettes are nicotine delivery devices or that Philip Morris deliberately alters nicotine levels in cigarettes. He claimed that he would not manufacture cigarettes if he were convinced they caused cancer. He denied knowledge of research to get nonsmokers to smoke or a marketing plan to target teenagers as replacements for smokers that quit or die. He denied knowledge about the Committee of Counsel, the Tobacco Institutes secret six, or a gentlemens agreement to limit in-house animal testing. He also denied knowledge of suppressing evidence in Minnesota and Florida lawsuits by destroying documents or sending them to Europe.
